Horseback Riding for Older Adults

September 8, 2023

Few experiences embody the American West, nature, and animal connection as well and as powerfully as horseback riding. Not only is an unforgettable activity, but horseback riding has myriad health and therapeutic benefits, including increases in balance and reductions in stress. At C Lazy U resort and ranch, we believe that everyone should be able to experience the magic of horseback riding, regardless of age, skill, or experience. Many older adults may wonder if riding a horse at an authentic dude ranch is something they can safely participate in. At C Lazy U, a top priority is fostering safety and empowering experiences for all of our guests.

How Does C Lazy U Make Horseback Riding Accessible to Older Adults?

Horseback riding at C Lazy U is something all of our guests cite as a highlight of their visit. Time with our horses is special, not just because of the inherent power and majesty of these noble creatures, but also because of the immense amount of work and dedication our world-class wrangler team puts in every day on the ranch. Riders need not worry about their individual skills or the temperament of their horse, as every riding guest at the ranch is matched with an animal that perfectly fits their ability, personality, and comfort level. Our herd of over 200 horses has the right companion for every rider, and once you’re matched with a horse, you’ll get to forge a strong bond with that animal over the duration of your stay.

Along with horses built for speed and adventure, C Lazy U has plenty of calm, friendly, beginner horses which are safe for our older guests and children. These horses understand that their job is to take care of guests, and these sweet souls do an exceptional job of caring for all of our patrons. Along with different horses, C Lazy U’s 8,500 acres of Rocky Mountain property allows for every type of riding experience.

For beginners or those that want to take things easy, we ride along flat, simple trails so guests don’t have to go up and down hills or difficult terrain (which can be hard on knees and hips). Horsemanship classes are also provided for every skill level, helping both beginners and seasoned riders alike develop greater abilities, comfort, and understanding of these incredible creatures.

At C Lazy U, we also offer an extra high mounting block to make mounting and dismounting easy for any guest that needs a little help. Our wrangler crew is happy to assist guests to make climbing on and off the horses as safe as possible.

Are There Maximum Age Restrictions?

C Lazy U has no maximum age restriction for horseback riding. We’ve even had a 101-year-old guest hop in the saddle and take a ride at the ranch.

Are There Health Restrictions?

The only set restriction for horseback riding at C Lazy U is based on rider weight. Weight is restricted to 250 pounds in order to ensure the safety of the animals. Mounting blocks help riders in getting onto the horse, but no motorized lifts are available. Guests looking to ride need  to be able to walk to the mounting block, place their foot in the stirrup and mount the horse (though wranglers can give you a boost).

Beyond that, as long as you can get on and off a horse with some assistance, balance yourself on the animal and steer, the ranch can most likely accommodate you. Guided experiences where a wrangler leads your horse and assists you are also available for guests simply looking to hop on a horse and have a good time.

Are There Supports for Sensory Impairments (such as those with hearing or visual impairments)?

C Lazy U can accommodate deaf people and the hearing impaired as long as another guest joins the ride that can help us communicate effectively. We currently have no assistance in place for riders with significant visual impairments, but we have a great relationship with the NSCD’s therapeutic riding program just down the road – some of the C Lazy U horses even join their program in the summers. The NSCD is an incredible program that can accommodate blind and other differently-abled riders, bringing the magic of horseback riding to everyone.

More Than Just Horseback Riding

If you’re unsure about your capacity for horseback riding you should consult your primary care physician, as anytime one rides a horse there is always a risk of falling. And if you’re unable to ride or just unsure – don’t worry. There’s a whole world of adventure to discover at C Lazy U. Whether it’s the heart of summer or the dead of winter, our authentic Western dude ranch offers something for everyone. Hike, fish, shoot, draw a bow – or head inside for some unforgettable pampering, a roaring fire, and gourmet, farm-fresh food. Motorized ranger tours also offer a great alternative to horseback riding for guests that still want to take in all the ranch sights and scenery.

A day spent in the snow has a special magic to it, especially if you’re riding horses over powdery hills, snowshoeing through glittering aspen groves, tearing down the slopes, or showing-up your friends at trap shooting. But the beauty of winter adventures doesn’t end when the sun dips below the mountains. At a C Lazy…
