Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Family & Children Programs

What activities are available for kids at C Lazy U Ranch?

C Lazy U Ranch offers a Children’s Program in the summer for ages 3–17, with age-specific activities like horseback trail riding, pony rides, fishing, swimming, paddle boats, art and crafts, ropes course, zip line, and games. The program is split up into age groups, each with counselor supervision. Ages 3-5 are Cowpokes, ages 6-12 are Mustangs and ages 13-17 are in the Teen group. Every child gets to experience the magic of Colorado ranch life in a way that’s fun, safe, and unforgettable. This program runs Memorial Day Weekend, 10 weeks of the summer, Labor Day Weekend, and during the Christmas and New Year’s peak periods.

Can children of different ages join activities together?

This depends on the activity. While most programs are grouped by age, there are some opportunities for kids to shuffle from one group to another, but it needs to be approved by the children’s program manager. The ranch also offers plenty of family-friendly experiences where parents can take their kids out of the children’s program and do activities like archery, BB gun shooting, hatchet throwing, trap shooting, ropes course, zip line, guided fishing, paddle boats, guided hiking, guided mountain biking, lawn games, pool time, and spa. In the evenings there is plenty of family time with games, s’mores, entertainment, talent shows, and kids’ carnivals where everyone can participate together.

Is there supervision for kids during activities?

Yes. All the children’s program activities are fully supervised by trained counselors who ensure kids are safe, engaged, and having fun while parents enjoy their own adventures.

Are there kid-friendly dining options at C Lazy U Ranch?

Yes. Our chefs prepare ranch-inspired meals with plenty of kid-friendly favorites, and the ranch is happy to accommodate picky eaters or special requests. During the summer (Memorial Day to Labor Day), kids dine with their counselors for dinner, enjoying age-appropriate menus made just for them.

What are the age requirements for the children’s programs?

Children as young as 3 can join our Cowpokes group (potty-trained required), while ages 6–12 are in Mustangs, and ages 13–17 participate in the Teen Program. In the off-season (September through May), our Little Ranch Hands program (ages 3–5) provides a supervised program for this age group.

C Lazy U Teen Program (Ages 13–17)

What are the program options for Teens?

Teens (ages 13–17) can choose from three distinct program options based on their interests, riding ability, and age. This new structure allows us to better match teens with the right level of riding instruction and adventure while creating the best possible experience for everyone in the teen program.

  1. Adventure On Teen Program – A mix of instructional riding and Colorado adventures, ideal for beginner to novice riders. Combines progressive horse riding instruction with outdoor adventures like ropes course, archery, hiking, fishing, and off-ranch excursions—ideal for teens who want to build riding skills while enjoying a well-rounded ranch experience.
  2. Avid Cowboy & Cowgirl Experience – Designed for experienced teen riders that LOVE horses, ride regularly or have spent several years at C Lazy U (lope assessment required). This program is designed for experienced riders who ride regularly and can demonstrate a secure seat, effective use of aids, and the ability to trot and lope confidently.
  3. “I’m Actually an Adult” Option – Teens 16+ may opt into the adult riding program and activities. This allows teens to participate fully in the adult riding program and dinners.

How do teens qualify for the Avid Cowboy & Cowgirl Experience?

The Avid Cowboy & Cowgirl Experience is for experienced teen riders who ride regularly or have spent several years at C Lazy U. Riders must demonstrate:

  • Have a secure, balanced seat
  • Can post and sit the trot
  • Understand riding with or without contact on the bit
  • Know the difference between a leading rein, direct rein, and indirect rein
  • Ride in a coordinated manner using their aids correctly
  • Can trot for extended periods and lope safely on flat, even terrain
  • All teens selecting this option must complete a lope assessment on Tuesday morning. If a teen overestimates their ability, they will be placed in the Adventure On Teen Program for additional instruction to ensure safety and success

Are teens required to sign up for rides and activities?

Yes. Beginning in 2026, all teen riders must sign up for every equestrian experience they plan to participate in, including trail rides. Ride reservations protect our herd from overuse and ensure all guests have fair access to riding opportunities.

What are the riding requirements and safety guidelines for teens?

For safety, all riders must:

  • Wear jeans
  • Wear a helmet (required for all riders under 18)
  • Wear proper riding boots (no flat sneakers, fashion boots, or chunky hiking boots)
  • The ranch maintains a 250-pound weight limit for horseback riding. Final riding eligibility is determined by Barn Management based on weight, physical ability, rider fitness, experience, horse size, terrain, and overall safety for both horse and rider

Can teens who need additional support participate in the program?

C Lazy U Ranch is an active working ranch and horseback riding environment. Our programs and trail rides are designed for teens who can safely participate in ranch activities, follow verbal safety instructions, and independently manage routine aspects of the experience.

For the safety of our guests, horses, and staff, we cannot provide one-on-one personal assistance or specialized adaptive riding equipment, and some activities may not be suitable for teens who require this level of support. Participation decisions are based on safety considerations and the specific requirements of our programs, rather than on any diagnosis or condition.

We encourage families to contact us in advance to discuss a teen’s individual needs so we can determine whether our programs will be a safe and enjoyable fit.

In the winter, guests can enjoy horseback riding, snow tubing, ice skating, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, downhill skiing, snowmobiling, trap shooting, fat tire bikes, sleigh rides and more.

Do I need riding experience to go horseback riding?

No. Guests of all experience levels can ride at C Lazy U Ranch. Our wranglers carefully match each rider with the right horse and provide guidance for beginners through advanced riders.

Does C Lazy U Ranch offer riding lessons or guided rides?

Yes. We offer guided trail rides to help guests build confidence and improve their horsemanship skills. Lessons or private instruction may be available; please contact the ranch for more details.

Does C Lazy U Ranch have a spa or wellness center?

Yes. The award-winning Lazy You Spa, perched above Willow Creek, offers massages and treatments in Creekside glamping tents, one of the most unique spa settings in the country. In addition to the Lazy You Spa, the ranch has a wellness area called The Hideaway, which is an adult-only wellness amenity and features a 10-person cedar hot tub, two cold plunges, a sauna and an outdoor relaxation firepit.

What seasonal activities are available in winter versus summer?

Summer is ideal for horseback riding, hiking, mountain biking, and Orvis fly fishing, while winter transforms the ranch into a snowy winter wonderland for ice skating, cross-country skiing, tubing, and sleigh rides.

What activities do guests do in the spring and fall?

The spring and fall seasons (April through May and September through November) are more representative of our warmer weather or summer activities. Some activities may be limited or not available during these time periods due to the seasonal conditions. Some good examples of this are fly fishing, which may be compromised by the spring runoff, and we shut down the fly fishing program in mid-October each year. Other activities that may be impacted are ropes course, zip line, hiking and mountain biking. Horseback riding in the winter and spring (typically November through April) are generally walk-only rides for safety. This also depends on the special or event that is going on, so please reach out to the ranch for more details so we can better communicate the seasonal variances depending on the activities that are most important to you.

When is there snow on the ranch for winter activities?

The Ranch typically has snow from the beginning or middle of December through the end of March and into early April. Most winter activities are available from December 15th through March 15th, but seasonal conditions may impact this by shortening or extending the winter season. Please contact the ranch for more details.

Are there adult-only programs or experiences?

Yes. The ranch offers dedicated adult-only weeks throughout the year (typically in May, early June, late August, September, and October) when no children are present. During family weeks, adults can still enjoy wine tastings, spa days, gourmet dinners, and adults-only trail rides while kids participate in supervised programs. Please visit the ranch’s website to see adult-only vs. family offerings and corresponding dates.

Are fly fishing, hiking, and other activities included in the stay?

This depends on the activity. Most outdoor activities are included in your all-inclusive package. Spa services, guided excursions like Orvis Endorsed guided fly fishing, trap shooting, snowmobiling, and select premium experiences may have an additional fee.

Do you offer family rides during your stay?

Yes. C Lazy U offers designated family rides where adults and kids can ride together. These are scheduled throughout your stay depending on season and programming. Please contact the ranch for more specific details.

Do you ride the same horse every day and on every ride?

Guests are assigned horses based on skill level and riding experience. You may ride the same horse multiple times or try different horses throughout your stay. Certain activities like cattle clinics may require a different horse than what you ride for trail rides, and rotating horses allows us to rest those that need a break.

Do I have to ride horses every day?

No. Riding is completely optional, and most guests do not ride every day or every session. Since sign-ups are required for all equestrian activities, guests can participate as much or as little as they’d like. We typically see guests riding once per day, and many skip a day or more to enjoy other activities, spend time with family, or explore the ranch. You can also gear your stay toward maximizing riding time by signing up for multiple sessions throughout your stay—the choice is yours.

What other activities do you offer that are not equestrian-related?

Summer Activities: Guided mountain biking, guided hiking, archery & trap shooting, ropes course and zip line (seasonal), Orvis-endorsed guided fly fishing, tennis, pickleball, swimming pool & hot tub, spa services at the Lazy You Spa, yoga or wellness programming, and evening entertainment & campfires.

Winter Activities: Snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, tubing & sledding, ice skating & hockey on the pond, fat tire bikes, and horse-drawn sleigh rides.

Offerings vary slightly by season.

Do I have to do a rider assessment?

Yes. All riders participate in a brief verbal rider assessment at the start of their stay. This ensures you’re paired with the right horse and placed in the appropriate riding group for your safety and enjoyment. Completing the pre-arrival form to provide information about your experience is essential to this process.

Do I have to sign up for activities and trail rides?

Yes. All trail rides and most activities require advance sign-ups so the ranch can manage group sizes, guides, equipment, and herd health. Space is limited and reservations ensure proper grouping and fair access. Some included activities like pool time, lawn games, and certain amenities are available at your leisure without sign-ups.

What should I wear for riding?

Riders must arrive at the mounting block in proper attire: jeans, a helmet or a secured hat, and riding boots. Sneakers, fashion boots, and chunky hiking boots are not allowed for safety reasons.

Is there a weight limit for riders?

Yes. The ranch enforces a 250-pound weight limit. Barn management will determine eligibility based on weight, physical ability, assistance needed, and overall safety for both horse and rider.

From the Horse's Mouth

We arrived late at night and received the warmest welcome of any vacation experience we have ever had. We were a little lost, it was dark but someone walked up to our car in the freezing cold (I think it was Taylor, the night manager) and said "Hello, we have been waiting for your arrival. Welcome Borsari family. You must be hungry, we have your plates waiting for you upstairs. Come on up to the lodge when you are ready and we will have your dinner waiting. Don't worry about checking in, we can take care of all that tomorrow. Come and get warmed up." My husband and I actually wanted to cry. LOL! we were all starving and he read our minds. The welcome was the warmest we have ever received, anywhere.
