Winter Horseback Riding: What to Expect

  • No horseback riding on check-in and check-out days.
  • Winter rides are walk-only for the safety of both horses and guests.
  • Winter horseback riding trails are more limited due to the winter snow and are maintained by the horses consistently walking them to keep the trails packed and usable.  Because of this, the ranch designates trails for winter riding that are closer to the main ranch compound, and with the winter elements these are typically shorter loops.  If you want to explore more of the ranch’s 8500+ acres in the winter you may wish to consider a snowmobile tour or a visit during our warmer months where all the trails are open.

Celebrate the long holiday weekend in true Colorado ranch style at C Lazy U. Spend your days exploring snowy mountain trails on horseback, gliding across the ice on our Zamboni-groomed pond, and cozying up by the fire with cocktails and live entertainment. Whether you’re looking for adventure, relaxation, or simply a memorable getaway with loved ones, this three-day escape is the perfect way to honor the holiday.

Daily Adventures

Each day begins with a hearty breakfast buffet at the Main Lodge before you set out for winter ranch activities. Guests enjoy a rotating schedule of:

  • Horseback trail rides & horse-drawn sleigh rides
  • Grooming clinics with our wranglers
  • Archery, hatchet throwing, and BB gun shooting
  • Ice skating and pond hockey on the ranch’s private pond

Special experiences are also offered daily:

  • Guided Snowshoe or Nordic Ski Tours twice daily.
  • Trap Shooting daily. ($50 per person)
  • Private Wine Tastings (see Outfitter’s Cabin for details)

Families can also sign up for the Ranger Ride ($20 per person) or catch the complimentary ski shuttle to nearby Granby Ranch or Winter Park Resort for downhill skiing.

Evening Entertainment

After an active day, unwind with cocktails and appetizers in the Lodge Lounge, followed by a gourmet dinner in the dining room. Each night features something new to look forward to:

  • Friday: Karaoke in the Lodge
  • Saturday: Live music & branding around the fire
  • Sunday: Game night in the Patio House

Always Available

When you’re not on the trails or pond, enjoy our year-round amenities:

  • Lazy You Spa (appointments daily, 9:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m.)
  • Lazy You Hideaway with hot tubs, sauna, and cold plunges
  • Game Room, Patio House, Fitness Center, and Lounge
  • Miles of trails for snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and fat biking

Ranch Blog

Talk of a Colorado dude ranch getaway most definitely conjures images of bright blue skies, foliage draped over mountain trails, and horses grazing in wide open pastures. Of course, you’ll find all that and more at C Lazy U — but here, where you start and end the day is just as important as how…

From the Horse's Mouth

Natalie taught us how to ride horses; her instruction was clear, gentle, and kind. She taught us the similarities and differences between English and Western riding. We loved our time with the horses, but especially because Natalie helped us understand how to best interact with the horses. Natalie also helped us on the Feed Wagon ride, which was particularly special for us, because we got to feed horses, watch them eat, and watch them follow the feed wagon. Many thanks to Natalie for helping make this part of our stay magical.
