Colorado is home to some of the most celebrated fly fishing waters in the country. From high-mountain streams to broad western rivers, anglers in the Centennial State have no shortage of places to cast a line. So what makes one fly fishing experience stand out from another?
At C Lazy U Ranch, the answer starts with the water itself. Storied Willow Creek winds through the ranch’s 8,500 acres, offering guests direct access to a productive trout fishery surrounded by open meadows, wildlife, and jaw dropping mountain views. But the creek is only part of the magic. The real secret sauce is the people spending their time out on the water with you.
To better understand what makes fly fishing at C Lazy U unique, we sat down with longtime guide Taylor Swift. No, not that Taylor Swift. Our Taylor spends his time casting, wading, and sharing his love of fishing rather than selling out stadiums.
Let’s see what fishing wisdom Taylor has to share.

A Guide Who Came West and Never Left
Like many people who fall in love with fly fishing, Taylor’s path started somewhere unexpected.
“I started fishing at a young age in the southeast but didn’t get into fly fishing until I moved out west in 2014. I was lucky to have a guide at C Lazy U take me under his wing and help bring me along as a fisherman.”
What began as a new hobby eventually became a career.
“I’ve always enjoyed spending time on the water and working in the hospitality industry. I naturally enjoy being around people. Becoming a fishing guide allowed me to take those two passions and turn them into a full-time job. I’ve found that teaching someone how to fish and being able to share time with them while fishing brings me the same joy as doing it myself.”
More than a decade later, he’s still here.
“I’ve been guiding fly fishing trips at the ranch since around 2015, I came out west after college looking for an adventure and just never left.”
Why Fly Fishing in Colorado Is Different
Colorado’s reputation among anglers is well earned. Few places offer such a variety of fisheries within a relatively short distance.
According to Taylor, that’s one of the state’s greatest strengths.
“Colorado has a very diverse fishing scene; you can find almost anything you’re looking for. Trout and cold-water species in the mountains, and carp and freshwater species on the front range.”
This diversity is a big part of what makes Colorado fly fishing so appealing to both complete beginners and lifelong anglers; you can be casting your first line or refining techniques you’ve practiced for years and still find something new to experience and enjoy.
Meet Willow Creek
For many guests, the highlight of their C Lazy U stay is fishing Willow Creek itself.
The creek runs directly through the ranch, creating opportunities that are increasingly difficult to find elsewhere: private access, uncrowded water, and the freedom to fish at your own pace.
Taylor describes it this way:
“Willow Creek is an amazing fishery that is fed by snowmelt and natural springs. It starts small up HWY 125 then once it hits the meadows it widens out into the classic trout stream, with fish spreading out to deep holes or holding tight in cover depending on the time of year.”
Like many productive trout streams, Willow Creek rewards anglers who pay attention to detail.
“Willow Creek is named Willow Creek for a reason. The ability to be able to cast in tight spaces and place your fly within around 2 inches of your target is a must.”
For experienced anglers, that challenge is part of the appeal. For beginners, it’s an opportunity to learn skills that translate to waters all over the country.
The Orvis Difference
One of the biggest distinctions at C Lazy U is something many guests don’t realize before they arrive: The ranch is one of only a handful of Orvis Endorsed Lodges in Colorado. That endorsement reflects both the quality of the fishing program and the guest experience surrounding it.
Taylor explains how that benefits anglers on the ground:
“C Lazy U offers its guests full access to around 2 miles of Willow Creek that can be fished on their own or with a guide. Most places will charge access fees even when staying on property, but we give all guests free range to fish where they like. As an Orvis endorsed Lodge, we use only the best equipment made by the Orvis Company and guests have access to borrow rods and packs to go out and fish on their own.”
For guests who have never fly fished before, having access to quality equipment and experienced instruction removes many of the barriers that can make the sport feel intimidating.

A Learning Experience
Many visitors arrive at C Lazy U with little or no fly fishing experience. That’s exactly why the guides focus on teaching, and not just catching fish.
“We tailor every trip to the individual angler, as a beginner we will work with you from the ground up teaching not only how but why so hopefully you will carry on your fishing adventure once you leave the ranch.”
For Taylor, success isn’t measured by the number of fish landed, but rather by whether guests leave feeling more confident than when they arrived. He also believes many newcomers misunderstand what the sport is really about.
“They call it fishing not catching; fly fishing can be inherently hard when you first start. It’s not about how many fish you catch but that you spend time out on the water with family and friends in beautiful surroundings. Fly fishing is more about putting the puzzle of the cast, the drift, and the fly selection together, and the fish is just a nice reward.”
That perspective sometimes catches people off guard. Fly fishing can certainly be exciting when a trout rises to your fly, but many anglers eventually realize the experience itself is what keeps them coming back.
Which Season is Best on Willow Creek?
While fly fishing can be productive throughout much of the year, Taylor has a favorite time to be out on Willow Creek.
“Fall is a fantastic time to fish on Willow, the trees are changing and the fish have put the feed sack on to get ready for the long winter.”
The combination of active fish, cooler temperatures, and changing mountain scenery makes autumn one of the most memorable times to visit and throw out a line.

What Taylor Hopes Guests Take Home
At the end of a guided trip, there’s always a chance guests will leave with a great photo or an unbelievable story about the fish that got away. But that’s not what matters most.
“Great guides know it’s not always about the fish but the relationship you can build with your client over the course of a trip… I hope that every guest comes away having learned something new, and that even if they didn’t catch fish that they enjoyed their time.”
It’s a simple philosophy, but it helps explain why so many guests return to Willow Creek year after year. The fishing is excellent, the setting is remarkable, but the real difference is that the experience isn’t built solely around catching fish or checking boxes. Here, fishing is about enjoying the water, learning from experienced guides, and becoming part of a fly fishing tradition that runs as naturally as the creek itself.
C Lazy Ranch offers half- or full-day fishing sessions on our private stretch of Willow Creek as well as half- or full-day trips on private stretches of nearby waterways such as the Colorado and Fraser Rivers.
