The Best Summer Vacation for Families Who Don’t Want to Go to the Beach

July 28, 2026

It’s summer vacation time! Ready for blistering sun, resort pools with no elbow room, long buffet lines, and itineraries built entirely around finding a halfway decent spot on the sand?

Look, there’s nothing wrong with a family beach vacation, but the trappings of such an affair can start to grate without a change of pace. For families looking for something more active, more memorable, and a little more unexpected, an all-inclusive Colorado dude ranch and luxury resort offers a completely different kind of getaway.

Want to see what the west has to offer? Here’s why so many families are trading the beach for the ranch.

Every Day Feels Like a New Adventure

One of the big issues with many traditional family vacations is that after a day or two, you’ve seen most of what there is to see. This is especially true if you’re staying at just one destination and not road-tripping to new scenery.

Forget the boring and the mundane! At C Lazy U Ranch, no two days ever have to look alike (but they totally can if you love a good routine).

You might spend one morning horseback riding through wildflower-filled meadows, then try archery or mountain biking in the afternoon. The next day could see you fly fishing on Willow Creek, spotting animals on a family hike through the Rockies, or testing your balance on the ropes course and zip line.

The best part — and what makes it really feel like a true adventure — is that no extensive planning is required. The vast majority of available activities are all-inclusive, on-site, and built into the ranch experience, making it easy to try something new whenever inspiration strikes.

The Best of Both Worlds for Kids and Parents

The best family vacations balance togetherness with independence. C Lazy U’s Children and Teens Program gives younger guests the opportunity to ride, explore, learn new skills, and make friends with other kids their age, all under the guidance of experienced staff.

While the kids are off having their own adventures, parents can enjoy a trail ride, spend an afternoon of restoration at the award-winning Lazy You Spa, soak at the Adults-Only Hideaway, or just enjoy a romantic moment over cocktails and scenic views.

The Mountains are a Big Part of the Experience

“The mountains are nice to look at, but isn’t that all you do?”

We understand where that sentiment comes from, since many mountain resorts are essentially glorified hotels where the actual mountains only serve as a backdrop. But the Rocky Mountains and life in the American West are inexorably linked, and as soon as you spend a full day out on the ranch, you’ll understand what we mean.

Here you’ll find 8,500 acres of preserved Colorado land to immerse yourself in. Summer at C Lazy U means cool mountain mornings, sunny afternoons, and wide-open views in every direction. Wildlife sightings are common, thousands of stars fill the night sky, and calm thoughts flow as easily as water through Willow Creek. When you hop on the back of a horse, you’re not riding a dusty old frontage road, but rather winding through forests, meadows, and mountain terrain that most visitors would never otherwise experience.

For many families, it’s an opportunity to reconnect with the outdoors and nature in a way that feels exciting and authentic rather than forced.

Forget Your Wallet and Your Day Planner

You’re not actually “getting away from it all” if you have to constantly balance a budget, track costs, and design an itinerary. At the same time, when people hear “all-inclusive family resort,” they often picture packed buffet lines and crowded pools.

What if you could have your cake and eat it, too?

Luxury accommodations, three gourmet meals per day, daily horseback riding, and a full lineup of ranch activities are all included in your stay at C Lazy U. We even have gear available for most of our activities at no charge, so you don’t have to worry about packing a whole expedition’s worth of equipment. There’s no complicated vacation logistics to manage and no need to constantly pull out your wallet for the next activity — just talk to the helpful folks at the Outfitter’s Cabin to get signed-up and outfitted for whatever call of adventure you feel in the moment.

Ease and simplicity are designed into the ranch experience, and allow families to focus on what they came for in the first place: spending time together.

A Different Kind of Summer Vacation

Ask families about their favorite ranch memories and you’ll rarely hear them mention a single attraction. Instead, they’ll talk about the horse their child fell in love with, that monster fish that got away (but that was definitely, unquestionably near 30” long), the campfire conversation that lasted long after sunset, or the first time a nervous rider gained confidence in the saddle. These are the moments that tend to stick, and the reason so many families return to the ranch year after year.

The beach will always be there. But if your family is looking for a summer vacation that combines adventure, relaxation, fresh air, and meaningful time together, a Colorado dude ranch offers something entirely different.

From the Horse's Mouth

I can't say enough about your staff. Jackson greeted us as soon as we pulled in. All of the servers were helpful, engaging, and they had an uncanny way of anticipating our every need. Trent must have a superpower because he never seemed to tire of us and our endless requests. He has a terrific sense of humor, and his name recall was outstanding. Peyton killed it with the karaoke (and he probably never wants to hear “Sweet Caroline” for the rest of his life.) He fit right in and had only been on the ranch for 3 days. I enjoyed the shooting time with him and Jackson. And the biggest shoutout to Trevor – hiker extraordinaire. If we'd asked him to take us 15 more miles, he would have done it with a smile. He appeared like magic the morning we left and was able to charge our completely dead car battery so that we could still make our flight. We would not have made it without him. The property is gorgeous, and the staff is over the top. The food, wine and drinks were outstanding. I hope to return next time with my family, though I'd repeat my girls' weekend in a minute.
