From Ranch Stage to American Idol and Beyond: Slater Nalley’s Journey Starts at C Lazy U

Music has always been a central part of the western experience. That’s why every year the Colorado Rocky Mountain sky fills with the sound of honest lyrics, soulful chords, and the spirit of authentic country storytelling at C Lazy U’s Singer Songwriter Week. Hosted by multiple-award-winning husband-and-wife duo Monty Powell and Anna Wilson, the event featured a special surprise in 2023: the discovery of an up-and-coming country music talent.

A Kid with a Guitar and a Dream

Slater Nalley, a teenage guitar player with aspirations of being a country musician, begged his parents to book a stay at C Lazy U during one of our songwriting events. That decision would change his life.

There was something special about Slater, something Monty and Anna recognized instantly.

“He has an old music soul that speaks with wisdom and understanding way beyond his years,” they said. When asked how they’d describe his voice and style, their answer was equally clear: “Honest, gritty, and deeply emotional.”

But it wasn’t just his sound that made an impression — it was his sense of self. “He knew exactly who he was as an artist, which is really rare even among older people.”

The hosts asked Slater to perform onstage at the event’s talent show, and all of the guests present were blown away by the soulful showing.

A One-of-a-Kind Mentorship

After that show, Monty and Anna invited Slater to their cabin for a more personal moment. He played a song he’d written when he was just 13 years old, titled “Blisters.”

“When he sat down in our cabin and sang the song ‘Blisters,’ that’s when we realized — this kid really has something special.” From there, the mentorship began.

“He was willing to be mentored, which again is very rare,” Anna explained. “His folks wanted to support him in his career but didn’t really know how to begin, so we created a program to help them all get what they wanted.”

That included enrolling Slater in their daughter Rebekah’s songwriting mentorship program and connecting him with a guitar teacher to sharpen his skills.

“We focused on his songwriting… we worked on his guitar playing by putting him with a teacher we know.”

The guidance provided by Monty and Anna allowed Slater’s already impressive foundation of musical talent to mature, becoming more refined, controlled, and focused. It was obvious the young artist was starting down the path to stardom.

The mentors’ favorite moment of the journey? Seeing Slater’s mom realize the depth of her son’s talent — something the American public was about to realize, as well.

From C Lazy U to American Idol

In 2025, Slater took the stage again — but this time, it was national. The young singer had earned a spot on the twenty-third season of American Idol, impressing judges and audiences alike.

“It was frankly a mixed reaction,” Monty and Anna admitted about seeing Slater on the show. “Idol can give you a lot of exposure, but it comes with the price of being locked into a long-term contract that isn’t very artist friendly.” Still, they were overwhelmingly proud of how far Slater’s passion and abilities had already taken him — and they were humbled by all of this starting at the ranch.

Even from his first moments at C Lazy U, Slater’s total commitment to becoming a singer-songwriter was evident, a drive that will serve him well in what is sure to be a remarkable career to come.

A Message for Future Songwriters

Today, Slater Nalley is on a path that few teenagers get the chance to follow. Though, for Monty and Anna, Slater’s story is about more than talent. It’s a reminder of what happens when drive meets opportunity — and when families believe in their kids.

“There is the gift, that you either have or you don’t,” Monty and Anna said. “Then there is the path, which is something you choose and you work at with everything you have.”

At C Lazy U Ranch, sometimes all it takes is a song under the stars to get started.

From the Horse's Mouth

Since it was my first time booking with the ranch I had many questions leading up to our visit. Some of which were probably repeat questions but anytime I called the front desk, the staff was always so patient and informative. Mike was our first introduction to the ranch and he really set the tone for the warm and inclusive welcome we received our whole trip.
