Preparing And Packing

The C Lazy U is located at 8,000 feet above sea level. At this altitude, golf balls travel farther… and the sun feels warmer, because you're closer to it. Your coffee will be cooler since  water boils at a lower temperature here. It is also a very dry climate and, with less water vapor in the air at this altitude, the sky really is bluer in Colorado. What does this mean for your trip to our breathtaking Colorado guest ranch? It means you need to be prepared with the facts!

• There is approximately 25 percent less protection from the sun at this altitude so sunscreen and sunglasses are a must.

• Drinking plenty of water is the number one way to help your body adjust to our higher altitude. The low humidity in Colorado keeps the air dry like the desert, so you need about twice as much water here as you would drink at home. The C Lazy U supplies all guests with refillable water bottles to make sure you stay hydrated.

• You may want to go easy on the alcohol since its effects will feel stronger here.

• The effects of exercise are more intense here as well. As an example: if you normally run 10 miles a day at home, 6 miles will be the equivalent while you're here.

• The temperature drops at night and we have the occasional afternoon thundershowers so you'll want a jacket or windbreaker even if you're coming in the middle of the Summer. You'll need a heavy jacket, hat and gloves during the Spring, Fall or Winter.

• Boots with a raised heel are essential for horseback riding to help keep your feet from slipping too far in the stirrups and to protect your ankles from rubbing against the stirrups.

• Tennis shoes don't work for horseback riding but are a good idea for playing tennis or basketball.

• Many parents prefer that their children wear helmets while horseback riding and some adults wear them, too. Your helmet should be ASTM/SEI certified to ensure proper safety for horseback riding and you should NEVER use a bike helmet.

• Hats are nice to keep the sun out of your eyes.

• You may want to bring shorts to change into after riding but will always want to wear long, comfortable jeans or pants while on horseback.

• Many guests like to wear chaps while riding since they help you grip the horse better and offer protection for your legs when riding through brushy terrain. A pair of fitted gloves will help you grip the reins. Chaps and gloves are not required but are a good idea for more advanced riders.

• Bring a swimming suit to wear to the pool and hot tub or, if you're coming in the winter, bring your ice skates so you can skate on the pond or play ice hockey!

If you forget to pack something, don't worry! You can always head over to the C Lazy U Trading Post to pick up anything you may have missed. We have everything from the perfect boots for horseback riding to toothpaste and can order supplies from town.
